The milestone marks the fastest growth phase in the system's history: the last 50 million rides took just 179 days, with average daily ridership climbing to 2.79 lakh, up 3.35 percent from the 2.70 lakh recorded at the 250-million mark in February.
Exponential Growth in Four Years
What makes Mumbai Metro's trajectory remarkable is the acceleration. The first 5 million rides took roughly five months after Lines 2A and 7 opened in 2022. A year later, the network had served 50 million. Each subsequent 50-million block arrived faster than the last: 100 million by May 2024, 150 million by January 2025, 200 million by August 2025, 250 million by February 2026, and now 300 million in August 2026.
The speed-up is not just organic growth — it is expansion-driven. On April 7, 2026, the MMRDA commissioned two new corridors: Line 2B Phase 1 from Diamond Garden to Mandale, and Line 9 Phase 1 from Dahisar East to Kashigaon. Together they added nine new stations to the network, opening metro access to parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region that had no rail connectivity.
Four MMRDA Lines Now Running
The MMRDA network currently comprises four operational lines. Line 2A, the Yellow Line, runs between Dahisar East and Andheri West. Line 7, the Red Line, connects Dahisar East to Gundavali. Line 2B Phase 1 extends service from Diamond Garden to Mandale, while Line 9 Phase 1 runs from Dahisar East to Kashigaon.
These four lines are distinct from Mumbai's two other metro operators. Line 1, operated by MMOPL, has been running the Versova-to-Ghatkopar corridor since 2014 and has separately carried over 1.11 billion passengers, averaging around 5 lakh daily riders. Line 3, the Aqua Line from Colaba to SEEPZ, opened under MMRCL management in October 2025 and runs 33.5 kilometres underground. Together, Mumbai's entire metro network now spans approximately 101 kilometres.
Connection to Bengaluru
Bengaluru's Namma Metro and Mumbai Metro share a parallel growth story. Both systems saw their ridership accelerate sharply when new lines opened access to previously unserved corridors. Namma Metro's own passenger numbers have climbed steadily through 2026 as the full 73.81-kilometre Purple and Green Line network matured, with the Pink Line's Bannerghatta Road elevated section expected to start service by September 2026.
The two cities are also on similar technology paths. Mumbai's Line 3 and Namma Metro's planned Pink Line underground section both use Communications-Based Train Control, and both systems have embraced digital ticketing — Mumbai with smart cards and day passes, Bengaluru with its NCMC One Card and WhatsApp-based QR ticketing.
