From South India's first metro to a 43-km cross-city spine
The Purple Line is where Namma Metro began. Its first stretch — Reach 1, the 6.7 km Baiyappanahalli → MG Road elevated section — opened on 20 October 2011, making it the first metro line to run in South India. The network grew outward from that spine over the next twelve years: the western elevated arm to Mysuru Road opened in November 2015, and in April 2016 the 5.12 km MG Road → Magadi Road stretch became Bengaluru's first underground metro, tunnelling beneath the dense city centre through Cubbon Park, Vidhana Soudha and Majestic. The 7.5 km Mysuru Road → Kengeri extension followed in August 2021.
