China's Line 12 launched 35.3 km of fully automated GoA4 metro on May Day, with the remaining northern section due later this year to close a 59.9 km loop — the longest orbital metro line on earth.
Wuhan inaugurated the first phase of Metro Line 12 on May 1, 2026, bringing 35.3 kilometres and 23 stations of fully automated, driverless metro service to the central Chinese city. When the remaining northern section opens later this year, the line will close into a 59.9-kilometre loop with 37 stations — making it the longest orbital metro line in the world.
The Ring That Links Seven Districts
Line 12 traces a loop through seven of Wuhan's central urban districts: Qiaokou, Jianghan, Jiangan, Qingshan, Hongshan, Wuchang and Hanyang. It connects the city's two main railway hubs — Wuchang Railway Station and Hankou Railway Station — and provides interchange with nearly every existing metro line, stitching together a network that now spans over 500 kilometres across 13 lines.
The second phase, running from Shilipu to Science Park, will add roughly 24.6 kilometres and 14 stations. When it opens — expected by October 2026 — it will close the loop and push Line 12 past both Delhi's Pink Line (58.6 km, completed March 2026) and Beijing's Line 10 (57 km, opened 2013) to claim the world-record title.
Fully Driverless From Day One
Line 12 operates at GoA4, the highest grade of automation — no driver, no attendant on board. The six-car Type A trains, built by CRRC, seat and carry up to 1,836 passengers and run at speeds up to 80 km/h. Of the planned 79-train fleet, 43 have been delivered for the opening phase.
The automation system handles everything from morning wake-up and depot departure through all-day revenue service to end-of-service return and shutdown — entirely without human intervention. Remote control capability provides a fallback, but routine operations are fully autonomous.
Why Orbital Lines Matter
Most metro systems are built as radial spokes fanning out from a city centre. Orbital or ring lines solve a different problem: cross-city trips that would otherwise require riding into the centre and back out again. Beijing's Line 10 demonstrated the concept at scale; Delhi's Pink Line extended it to 58.6 km; Wuhan's Line 12 takes it further still.
The design is especially valuable in polycentric cities — those with multiple employment centres, railway hubs and commercial districts rather than a single downtown core. Wuhan, split across three towns by the Yangtze and Han rivers, fits that description precisely.
Connection to Bengaluru
Namma Metro's proposed Phase 3 Outer Ring Road line follows the same orbital logic — a ring route connecting the existing Purple and Green radial lines without forcing commuters through the congested city centre. If approved and built, it would serve a function for Bengaluru comparable to what Line 12 does for Wuhan: linking peripheral employment hubs (Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Peenya) directly to each other.
The driverless technology is also directly relevant. Bengaluru's Pink Line underground section (Dairy Circle to Nagawara, 13.76 km) is being built for GoA4 driverless CBTC — the same automation grade Wuhan is running on Line 12. Wuhan's experience with a 79-train driverless fleet across a 60 km loop will be closely watched by metro authorities planning similar deployments.
