Rajajinagar was inaugurated in July 1949 by the Maharaja of Mysore to mark the 70th birthday of C. Rajagopalachari (Rajaji), the freedom fighter and last Governor-General of independent India. Planned in the late 1940s-50s by the City Improvement Trust Board (CITB, predecessor of the BDA) as one of Bangalore's first organized post-independence layouts, roughly 1,000 acres were allocated across housing, textile, machinery, chemical and food-sector plots — making it a planned mixed residential-industrial suburb rather than an area of organic growth.
The Green Line's 2014 arrival turned Rajajinagar into a key interchange point for West Bangalore, cutting commute times to Majestic and the city centre sharply. The Shopping Complex and Navrang Theatre precinct remain the commercial heart of the area even as newer malls have opened further out.
