The area takes its name from the Government Soap Factory established here in 1916 under Maharaja Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV and Sir M. Visvesvaraya, originally set up to process sandalwood oil from Mysore's reserves after wartime export difficulties. It began producing the now-famous Mysore Sandal Soap in 1918 and was later reorganized as Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL), a Karnataka state government enterprise that still manufactures here today.

The metro station, opened in March 2014, is one of the few in India named directly after a working heritage factory rather than a locality. It has made the KSDL campus and the wider industrial zone far more accessible, including for the IISc-bound commute that previously relied entirely on road transport.
